RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM – June 22, 2013 – R.D. Hubbard’s homebred Reaper got a veteran ride from Duane Lee Sterling and rallied to win the $167,391 Mountain Top Thoroughbred Futurity for New Mexico-breds on Saturday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.
A gelded son of Attila’s Storm, Reaper raced the five furlongs in :59.44.
Reaper started from the eighth post position in the nine-horse field and Sterling kept Reaper out of trouble while racing in a three-wide position. The gelding then responded when asked by Sterling to catch the Carlos Madeira-trained Unsociable Major, who had gained the lead on the turn, to win by an expanding one-and-one-quarter length. The late-running Beaumont Time grabbed third, one length behind Unsociable Major.
One of three horses in the field from the Todd Fincher stable, Reaper won his career debut in the three trials with a similar style that indicates he should relish added distance. He took his trial by three quarters of a length after racing in fourth-place down the backstretch.
Joel Barchardt’s runner-up Unsociable Major won his maiden in his second start when he won by three quarters of a length for trainer Dallas Barton. He was a $5,000 Ruidoso Yearling Sale purchase.
